Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read Literacy Program Introduced at Beacon Pediatrics
Rehoboth Beach, DE, 2/16/2016- Getting books from the doctor will soon be a routine part of regular pediatric checkups at Beacon Pediatrics, as doctors and nurses welcome the Reach Out and Read program to the practice. As of February 16, 2016, Beacon Pediatrics is joining more than 5,000 program sites nationwide that are preparing America's youngest children to succeed in school.
Beacon Pediatrics will be utilizing the Reach Out and Read's three-part model to promote early literacy and school readiness. This includes:
1. Giving every child 6 months through 5 years old a new, developmentally-
appropriate children's book to take home and keep.
2. In the exam room, speaking with parents about the importance of reading aloud to their young children every day, and offering age-appropriate tips and encouragement.
3. In the waiting room, having displays, information, and books to create a literacy-rich environment. In the future we may incorporate volunteers to read to children in the waiting room, thus modeling for parents the pleasures and techniques of reading aloud.
The end goal of Reach Out and Read is to prepare all children to enter kindergarten ready to read, learn, and succeed. Reach Out and Read is a proven intervention that delivers results, and is supported by at least 15 independent, published research
studies. During the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests. These foundational language skills help start children on a path of success when they enter
school. The Reach Out and Read model is endorsed by the American Academy of
Pediatrics. This year, Reach Out and Read's 20,000 volunteer medical providers will distribute 6.5 million new books to 4 million children in all 50 states.
We at Beacon Pediatrics are excited to start this program at our practice. Through a generous donation from Cathy Haut, PNP and the support of the Beebe Medical Foundation, we have been able to launch this program. We are delighted to have this opportunity to support our patients and our community. Going forward, we will be
depending upon your generous support; all monetary gifts are tax deductible and will be channeled through Beebe Medical Foundation.

New Electronic Medical Record
Beacon Pediatrics is excited to have a new electronic medical record system. With this change, we will be able to provide our patients and families with access to an improved patient portal. This portal will be more user friendly than our previous system. The portal allows you to schedule and view appointments, receive test results, view immunization records, view visit summaries, patient education information, view billing statements and balance and send secure messages to your pediatrician. Please be aware that the "old" immunization records are still not available on the portal - we expect them in the near future.

We are now OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK except for a few holidays. Office Hours are listed on the home page.
